The West Harlem Arts Alliance and Art on the Ave
transform West Harlem storefronts into a
vibrant arts exhibition entitled
“West Harlem, Where Arts Lives”.
West Harlem, NYC – August 20, 2024. Amid the empty windows of shuttered storefronts, the West Harlem Arts Alliance is presenting Art on the Ave NYC in a vibrant initiative to breathe life into a struggling commercial corridor in the heart of West Harlem while celebrating the works of local artists who dialogue about Harlem, a community rooted in history, alive with culture, and to quote Lanston Hughes’ poem Mother to Son, “...still climbin.”
Situated within the neighborhoods of Morningside Heights, Manhattanville, and Hamilton Heights, West Harlem’s storied past and current contributions to its ongoing renaissance, makes this iteration of Art on the Ave a seminal event.
Over the course of three months, 50 West Harlem artists will have their works showcased in two rotations, offering the public an ever-evolving glimpse into the creativity that thrives in this historic district. The exhibition will also feature programmed art-making events and cultural experiences for the public to participate in and enjoy.
Transforming the old Hamilton Place corridor now integrated into Montefiore Square Park, this exhibition is an interactive art experience. Each artist’s work is accompanied by an audio artist statement, accessible to viewers via QR codes, providing deeper insight into the art, the artist, and their connection to the community.
The art on display explores themes central to the community, including social equity, inclusivity, environmental health, and the enduring spirit of creativity that defines the area.
“West Harlem, Where Art Lives” is a testament to the area's legacy in the arts and its inherent vibrancy and cultural diversity.
Art on the Ave continues its tradition of bringing art directly to the community, turning vacant spaces into platforms for artistic dialogue and cultural celebration.
This exhibition is a celebration of art that reaffirms West Harlem’s place as one of New York City’s most dynamic cultural quarters. Art on the Ave invites everyone to experience the creativity, diversity, and passion that make West Harlem a place where art truly lives.
