Alvin Ailey's Artistic Director Robert Battle Launches Children's Picture Book, My Story, My Dance: Robert Battle's Journey to Alvin Ailey

Posted November 6, 2015

The launch of MY STORY, MY DANCE: Robert Battle’s Journey to Alvin Ailey, the moving children’s picture book from Simon & Schuster, was celebrated at The Ailey Studios on October 29th through reading, dancing and discussion. Artistic Director Robert Battle was joined by author and illustrator couple Lesa Cline-Ransome and James E. Ransome, who spoke about their personal connection to Ailey and their special roles in creating this heart-warming picture book biography. Mr. Battle recounted how seeing Revelations for the first time as a boy in Miami set him on a path to achieve his goals. “Having experienced first-hand the transformative power of the Ailey legacy, I’m honored by the creation of this book based upon my life,” stated Battle, “It’s so meaningful to know that this moving story will inspire the next generation of students to dream big and reach high.” Students from The Ailey School listened intently when Mr. Battle read from the book and beamed as they brought to life an excerpt from Alvin Ailey’s masterpiece. The students asked questions and soaked up Mr. Battle’s wise and witty advice to stay focused, keep dreaming and dancing diligently, and to remember that if a boy with leg braces can grow up to be a dancer and choreographer, then they can accomplish anything.

MY STORY, MY DANCE: Robert Battle’s Journey to Alvin Ailey is the inspiring picture book biography of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Artistic Director Robert Battle featuring illustrations brimming with vibrant color that really “dance.” For ages 5-10, it tells the unique story of a young boy whose life is filled with music, church, and movement – first practicing martial arts, and then discovering his passion for dance. As a young boy wearing leg braces, Robert Battle never dreamed he’d study at Juilliard, become an acclaimed choreographer or lead Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater around the world. But support from his family and teachers paired with his desire and determination made it possible for Robert to excel. Today, Robert’s expansive vision continues to further the Company’s inspirational celebration of the human spirit and African-American culture. The book contains a foreword by Robert Battle, a bibliography suggesting further reading, and an author’s note. MY STORY, MY DANCE is published by Paula Wiseman Books, a division of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing and is available for purchase at all Ailey performances, at the Ailey boutique, at www.AileyShop.com, at bookstores nationwide and on Amazon.com.

The book’s launch precedes Ailey’s New York City Center performances from December 2nd through January 3rd followed by a 20-city U.S. tour. The five-week New York holiday season, with premieres and new productions, will feature Awakening - Robert Battle’s first world premiere since becoming artistic director - a powerful dance that follows a community on a cathartic journey.
