Expanding the Walls: Making Connections Between Photography, History, and Community marks the 25th anniversary of a transformative photography program that empowers teens to explore identity, history, and community through the camera.
Featuring photographs created over the program’s 25-year history, the exhibition highlights how young artists document adolescence while responding to evolving photographic technologies — from Polaroid and film to digital media.
A core element of the program is engagement with the archive of renowned Harlem photographer James Van Der Zee (1886–1983), offering participants a deeper understanding of Harlem’s history and photography’s role in preserving cultural identity.
