Accessibility to all – from space to food and wine, for those in the neighborhood and living with disability – was the core inspiration for Contento, which just opened in East Harlem and is a collaboration of sommeliers and social advocates Yannick Benjamin and Mara Rudzinski, Executive Chef Oscar Lorenzzi and two entrepreneurs tied to Harlem and disability communities. Wheelchair users themselves, Yannick and Contento partner (and East Harlem resident) George Gallego wanted the design to incorporate features for all wheelchair users including a lower bar counter, slightly higher tables and enough space to navigate comfortably, and offer adaptive utensils. As part of their mission, the team will also use its resources and space for programming focused on social sustainability and job training for those living with disabilities.

The Peruvian-born Chef Oscar Lorenzzi has worked at iconic NYC restaurants including the Waverly Inn, Marseille and Nice Matin. The seasonally-focused menu, reflects influences from his native Peru, New York’s culinary diversity and his French training.

In place of bread service, guests are served Cancha or corn nuts, a popular snack in Peru. Botanas (snacks) include Panisse with Uchucuta sauce (Peruvian salsa verde) and Mussels Escabeche, while small plates highlight seasonal vegetables and seafood: Charred Seasonal Vegetables with green tahini, pickled celery, morita chile and sunflower dukkah; Ceviche Classico, corn, onion, cilantro, sweet potato, leche de tigre; and Octopus with black chimichurri & chilled cauliflower gazpacho. Pizzas include YB with mushroom, potato, raclette cheese and Verde, chorizo, tomatillo, Oaxacan cheese. Large plates feature Creamy Quinoa - risotto “Quinotto” with favas, peas, pea tendrils, parmesan cream; Salmon with barley salad, zucchini pico de gallo, pumpkin seeds; Nikkei Kurobuta Pork Katsu with spicy vinegar daikon slaw, yuzu aioli; and the Contento Burger with brandy caramelized onions, green pepper aioli and raclette.
