Maysles Cinema Announces - Uptown Flicks: "Speak Up" & "Faces, Places"

Posted October 12, 2017

Uptown Flicks @ Maysles, curated by Adeline Monzier and co-organized by Marie Gentine, is a 7-part monthly series, (October 2017-April 2018), surveying the best of recent French, French co-produced, and francophone documentary and verite films. Each screening is followed by a chance to mingle, drink in hand, and share your reactions with other audience members. The films presented all have one thing in common: they are questioning the current state of the world, sometimes with a radical perspective, sometimes with a hopeful look at humanity at its best, and end up opening our eyes to the role images and narratives play in bringing these issues to our awareness.

SPEAK UP

Stéphane de Freitas, 2017, 99 min.

Each year at the University of Saint-Denis in the suburbs of Paris, the Eloquentia competition takes place to determine the best orator in the class. Speak Up (À voix haute - La Force de la Parole) follows the students, who come from a variety of family backgrounds and academic disciplines, as they prepare for the competition while coached by public-speaking professionals like lawyers and slam poets. Through the subtle and intriguing mechanics of rhetoric, these young people both reveal and discover themselves, and it is impossible not to be moved by the personal stories that surface in their verbal jousts. Without sentimentality, Speak Up proves how the art of speech is key to universal understanding, social ascension, and personal revelation.

Q&A with director Stéphane de Freitas and film protagonist Leïla Alaouf, followed by a reception with Intîme boutique wine and delicious food from Harlem's best French bistro & bar Yatenga.

In Partnership with the Film Society of Lincoln Center and with the support of UniFrance, Intîme Wines, and Yatenga French bistro and bar.

Speak Up is a A 55th New York Film Festival Official Selection.

November 9th, 7pm
FACES, PLACES

Agnès Varda, JR, 2017, 90 min.

89-year old Agnes Varda, one of the leading figures of the French New Wave, and acclaimed 33 year-old French photographer and muralist JR teamed up toco-direct this enchanting documentary/road movie. Kindred spirits, Varda and JR share a lifelong passion for images and how they are created, displayed and shared. Together they travel around the villages of France in JR's photo truck meeting locals, learning their stories and producing epic-size portraits of them. The photos are prominently displayed on houses, barns, storefronts and trains revealing the humanity in their subjects, and themselves. Faces Places documents these heart-warming encounters as well as the unlikely, tender friendship they formed along the way.

Q&A TBA followed by a reception with delicious food from Harlem's best French bistro & bar Yatenga.

With the support of UniFrance and Yatenga French bistro and bar.
